Project Manager, Legacy Renewable Energy Assets

BayWa r.e. Benelux, Amersfoort, The Netherlands, Full-time, freelance

About the role

BayWa r.e. Benelux manages a portfolio of legacy projects across solar, BESS and wind. These are projects that are operational, in post-COD phase, commercially unresolved, or subject to contractual, technical or legal follow-up.

We are looking for a dedicated Project Manager to take ownership of this portfolio and bring projects to a controlled close. This role is about resolution, discipline and follow-through. You ensure that open obligations are managed, disputes are handled, technical and financial exposure is understood, and each project is brought to a clean operational or contractual endpoint.

This is not a development role. It is a hands-on role for someone who is comfortable with complexity, detail, claims, counterparties and imperfect project histories. You work closely with legal, finance, O&M and management.

Key responsibilities

Contract management and dispute resolution

  • You manage open contractual obligations and disputes with EPC contractors, landowners, grid operators, clients and other counterparties.
  • You understand the contractual position of each project and translate it into practical action. You know what remains to be delivered, where claims may exist, what can be enforced and where settlement is the better route.
  • You coordinate external legal advisors where required and act as the operational counterpart between legal and the business.
  • You lead or support negotiations to close disputes, settle claims and finalise outstanding matters, including performance guarantees, PR discussions, milestone payments, variation claims and post-completion obligations.

Financial control and risk management

  • You maintain a clear financial view on each legacy project, including actual spend, remaining liabilities, provisions, expected recoveries and residual cash flows.
  • You ensure that project reporting reflects the real status of the file, including quantified commercial and legal risk where possible.
  • You proactively escalate material issues to management with a clear recommendation on options, exposure and next steps.

Technical follow-up and operational close-out

  • You monitor the technical status of legacy assets and coordinate follow-up with O&M teams, clients, consultants and technical advisors.
  • You manage punch lists, outstanding works, defect resolution and completion matters, and ensure that technical documentation and handover files are complete and usable.
  • You identify technical issues that may have legal, contractual or financial consequences and ensure they are addressed early.

Stakeholder management and internal coordination

  • You are the primary business contact for legacy counterparties, clients and investors on the projects under your responsibility.
  • You maintain structured alignment between legal, finance, O&M and management and ensure that project status, risks and decisions are clearly documented.
  • You prepare concise, decision-ready updates, position papers and status notes that allow management to act quickly and with confidence.

What we are looking for

Background and experience

  • You have solid experience managing the close-out or post-completion phase of complex technical projects, ideally in renewable energy, construction, infrastructure, utilities or industrial environments.
  • You have experience with contractual disputes, claims management, settlement discussions and project documentation.
  • Experience with EPC contracts, performance guarantees, O&M agreements, grid connection arrangements and post-COD issue management is a strong advantage.

Skills and capabilities

  • You are highly structured and detail oriented. Legacy projects involve history, documents, obligations and moving parts, and you are able to keep control of them.
  • You are resilient and solution focused. You stay calm in difficult situations and know how to move a project from friction to resolution.
  • You communicate clearly in writing and verbally. You can produce structured summaries, risk notes and position papers that management and legal can act on.
  • You are financially literate and comfortable with project P&L logic, residual cash flows, provisions and quantified risk.
  • You are fluent in Dutch and English.

What you can expect

  • You will have a clear mandate and direct access to management on files that matter.
  • You will work on real projects with real complexity and visible business impact.
  • You will join a team that values ownership, clarity and closure over unnecessary process.
